THE SYMBOLIC CEMETERY
The Symbolic Cemetery is a solemn memorial to the victims of the Tatras. Located in the beautiful nature, you will find memorial plaques dedicated to those who paid for their love to the Tatras by their lives. Some were climbers who did not reach the Tatra peaks, while others were victims to accidents. There also is a propeller of a Slovak military plane from World War II there, memorializing a tragic flight that ended by a crash into the Gerlach Peak. Some memorials commemorate the Tatra rescuers, brave men that died on duty while saving others.
The Cemetery is accessible by walking only. The best way is to begin the hike in Strbske Pleso. Follow along the red marked path, which offers broad views to the Mengusovska Valley. Alternatively, you may take the green marked path. Once you will reach the Popradske pleso lake, you will certainly appreciate an opportunity to eat and rest at the Chalet on the lakeside, which is 1500 meters above the sea level. Alternatively, you may consider to follow to the Velke Hincovo Lake, which is the largest glacial lake on the Slovak side of the High Tatras, 1944 meters above the sea level.
To reach the Symbolic Cemetery, walk from the Chalet around the Popradske pleso lake, taking the yellow-marked path. Within fifteen minutes you will get to the Cemetery. After visit, descend down the valley along the blue-marked path leading to the Popradske pleso stop of the Tatra Electric Railway.
